Live Baby Live: Wembley Stadium captures the memorable performance and features the hits ‘Need You Tonight‘, ‘New Sensation‘, ‘Devil Inside‘ – a previously thought ‘lost’ track ‘Lately’ from the album ‘X’ – and many more. Speaking about this show, INXS’ Garry Gary Beers remembers “The whole band was on fire that night but especially at our ‘pointy end’ – Michael was so good as he sang his heart out and gave every person in the crowd a night to remember for all time. He truly had that amazing ability to make the biggest shows as intimate as the pubs we grew up in musically”. Unlike the original Live Baby Live album (from 1991), which took its audio from various shows from that tour, this new release is the soundtrack to this one performance at Wembley, with the audio newly remixed by Giles Martin & Sam Okell at Abbey Road Studios. Both vinyl and CD formats feature unseen imagery from the show, new essays from the band and sleeve notes by broadcaster and uber INXS fan Jamie East, who was in the crowd that day. These physical audio releases coincide with a new theatrical presentation of the original Live Baby Live concert film. The film has been restored from the original 35mm negative to Ultra HD 4K. I was lucky enough to get a preview of this earlier in the year and can confirm that it’s stunningly good. They’ve actually converted 4:3 to 16:9 with careful shot-by-shot reframing, for the full cinematic experience. The audio for the film will be in Dolby Atmos (again by Giles Martin and Sam Okell). The Live Baby Live concert film will be in cinemas in Australia and New Zealand from November 14, North and South America from December 9, and in the UK on November 27. Check for local listings. The Stairs was only ever issued as a limited edition live single in Holland making it one of the most highly prized items in the INXS canon. It’s truly one of the band’s ‘lost classics’. This new digital single of ‘The Stairs’ was recorded on Saturday 13th July 1991, when INXS, one of the world’s most revered and iconic bands, delivered the gig of their lives at London’s Wembley Stadium to 74, 000 ecstatic fans. After a decade and a half on the road the group was at the peak of their live powers and the performance that day shows they were now indeed a world-class stadium band. INXS’s Kirk Pengilly says of the song: “The Stairs’ was one of our favourites to perform live. It starts simply giving us a breather on stage and then builds & builds right to the end. I think this (LBL) version is more powerful than the studio recording. Definitely one of Michael’s finest, “social comment” lyrics’. At the time Michael Hutchence described ‘The Stairs’ as “The most ambitious song I’ve ever written. ” Guitarist Tim Farriss remembers that it was “Probably one of my favourite songs we ever recorded and a stand out track of Live Baby Live. Pretty much sums up the ever changing passages of the lives we all lead and how they all intertwine. ” Andrew Farriss who co-wrote the song with Hutchence spoke about the track in 1990 saying “It deals with people in highly urbanised environments not communicating”. Almost thirty years later the song has lost none of its power and is as relevant today as it was then. Just saw Live Baby Live on the big screen. My goodness. I knew Hutchence was a rare frontman, but this film shows us just how special he was. Bono was right. He was the best of his generation. Notice how tattoos hadn't made their way out of rock and metal yet and into pop. This was an Australian bar band that was thrust into super-stardom with the likes of New Wave Giants like U2, Simple Minds and Duran Duran. INXS didn't use the advanced VariLites, lasers and projections of Pink Floyd and Genesis in the same period. But for me that just highlights how the band had to entertain more people with less. This 4K remaster is incredible. The dolly shots and rapid editing make it look like a slick music video start to finish. The remastered sound puts you there in old Wembley. You just don't have to press yourself against thousands of strangers for hours. What a concert film.
